A vaccine is a biological preparation that improves immunity to a particular disease. Vaccines typically contain a component that is derived from the bacterium (or virus) that causes the disease, and can stimulate the immune system to recognize that component as foreign. The vaccine components include protein antigens (derived from the pathogen), carrier proteins (that improve/broaden immune response by effectively displaying antigens attached to them) and adjuvants (that enhance the effect of co-administered antigen). Vaccine carriers are usually modified bacterial/viral antigens that are chemically or genetically detoxified. Vaccine components are available in reagent, preclinical and cGMP grades to support seamless vaccine development.
